DC-DC Transformer

A DC Convert to DC Transformer is an electronic component or device that converts direct current (DC) input into DC output, stepping an input DC voltage up or down to a different voltage level.

DC/DC converters fall into two main types by voltage conversion function: those that produce a lower output voltage than the input are defined as step-down converters, while those that deliver a higher output voltage are referred to as boost converters. They can also be classified as isolated or non-isolated power supplies according to their input and output electrical relationships.

For instance, vehicle-mounted DC/DC units convert high-voltage DC from the car's power system into low-voltage DC. Since electronic components such as ICs operate within specific voltage ranges, DC/DC conversion is required to match their rated working voltages.

In principle, such devices first convert input DC into AC via a self-oscillating circuit. The AC voltage is then adjusted by a high-frequency transformer and rectified back into stable DC output. Alternatively, some designs adopt a voltage-doubler rectifier circuit to generate high-voltage DC output from AC input.
