A Planar Transformer is a compact high-frequency transformer designed for efficient power conversion, voltage transformation, and electrical isolation in modern power electronic systems. Unlike conventional wire-wound transformers, it uses a low-profile magnetic core with flat copper windings formed by PCB conductors or thin copper foil, enabling a thinner and more compact construction.
The planar structure provides close magnetic coupling, low leakage inductance, high power density, and efficient thermal management. Its compact form factor makes it well suited for high-frequency switching power supplies and other applications where space, efficiency, thermal performance, and reliable electrical isolation are important.

Working Principle
A Planar Transformer operates through electromagnetic induction between primary and secondary windings. When an alternating or high-frequency switching voltage is applied to the primary winding, it generates a changing magnetic flux in the planar magnetic core. This changing magnetic flux induces a voltage in the secondary winding, enabling voltage conversion and galvanic isolation between the input and output circuits.
The flat winding structure allows the primary and secondary conductors to be positioned closely and precisely around the magnetic core, improving magnetic coupling and helping reduce leakage inductance. The high-frequency design also supports compact power conversion, while the planar construction provides a short thermal path for effective heat dissipation.
