A flyback transformer, also known as a single-ended flyback or buck-boost converter, gets its name from the fact that its output gains energy when the primary winding is disconnected from the power supply. Flyback converters are favored by many development engineers due to their simple circuit structure and low cost.
Flyback transformers are suitable for low-power power supplies and various power adapters. However, the design challenge of a flyback converter lies in the transformer itself. This is because it has a wide input voltage range; especially under low input voltage and full load conditions, the transformer operates in continuous current mode, while under high input voltage and light load conditions, it operates in discontinuous current mode.
